Mustang from Lelong

This is my friend mustang. The size is quite small but the detail is there. The plane is made from soft foam reinforced with balsa inside the fuselage. But the tail section entirely made from foam. So this mustang cannot take hard landing. Need a little work to assemble since it need rudder assembly and some modification on wing due to missing support to attach to the fuse.

F4U Corsair by LanYu

A friend ask me to fly his Corsair last Fridays. Everything stock setup with brushed motor, radio and nicd battery. This model by Lan Yu. A little bit underpowered and require full throttle to take her off. Landing a bit rough due to very tick weeds.

Assan GA410 Gyro

This is unbiased review of ASSAN GA410 gyro since I bought this gyro personally on my own money. No string attach.

I've give this gyro a quick test this morning and one thing that I can say boy I'm wrong..GA410 perform very well. Tail hold steadily in normal or idle up mode. Piro rate is good and fast. Tail stop firmly on rudder stick command.

Setup is fairly easy the same setup with GY401:
  1. First set in your radio dual rate mode in gyro menu. Gyro and normal. In gyro mode dial in 50% and in normal mode 50%.
  2. Then setup your tail servo and find it's center position. Turn on the radio and power up ur heli. Switch to normal mode. Set your tail to slightly 5 degree to the right.
  3. Check your tail travel and set servo travel on the gyro.
  4. That's it. Switch in Gy mode and set in your gyro sens. Mine is at 37%.

Flasher 450 PE

This is the a sneak preview of Flasher 450 PE yet another Trex SE clone but with attitude. It's super cheap and comes with CF frame and FG blade and some CNC part. It's already 95% from completion just waiting for the gyro installation. I'm going to use GA410 from ASSAN and it's already here on my desk.

This is my setup:
Align 3550kv motor (12T pinion)
40A Turnigy ESC
3xMG HXT servo
1 hitec tail HS56

Extra EF updates

Finally my extra took off from the ground..maiden laa.. last friday. Maiden by Ilham and after few trims and land I take over. Fuh..I really like my EF. 3D flying is as expected and after few prop hangs (1/3 throttle required..fuh) and rojak 3D I take her down. I'm so supprice that I was able to put her down gently on the ground by doing harrier landing. It's like someone put her down on a spot. A true spot landing..Sadly no video this time..will take video next time. Thanks Ilham..

Another collection of my aerial video

The first video taken at peremba. The wind is very strong and my plane drift many times and much harder during landing since the wind comes from many directions. She took a hard landing but again escape with no injuries.

The second video taken during my visit to Sungai Petani RC field last saturday evening. Not many flyers there during my visit. Only one "botak" uncle flying his super sport. I take out all my plane (yellow and orange sporter, zagi, and skymaster) and had very good flights. All went well. Hamid showed a little bit late that day.

It's H20 time..

Guest what I'm going water. This is not mine but my friend collections, Rizal. This is fully custom build fiber glass speed demon from Thailand master builder. The yellow one is true demon with water cooled ESC and motor. But I'm interested with the red and blue one since it can use my BL 450 motor to run. But the price..huhu RM800++ for the blue/red one.

Hydrofoam

This is my first float plane..it takes me only 2 hours to assemble her. Very simple construction and nice color scheme too. My setup is 1500kv motor, 8x6 prop, 25A esc, 3 hxt servo and 1550mah 3s1p lipo. This hybrid use elevon and rudder control. I only set her with 30 degree throw.

I've tested this morning at peremba stadium and to my suprise this plane very easy to control even can ROG from the ground. The CG and everything nicely in place. Only require small trim on aileron but the rest was superb. I take her in the air twice. No picture or video taken..or else I can show how good she look in the air. My personal oppionion this plane is suitable for intermediate flyer and for anyone who have some experience flying zagi.

Sundowner Capt Faisal Test Flight

Test flight of Sundowner F1 with Moki engine by Capt Faisal at Suka Menanti flying site. This really one giant plane..huhu..total cost almost reaching 7-8k..sure this is out of my league..:D

Work in progress..EF Extra300 45' Updates!!

Review and build process for Extreme Flight Extra300 45'

I've decided..I going to start with Extreme Flight Extra300 45' first since it is my first balsa plane. Well actually its already the third day of my building process. There are a few new things during building balsa plane that I'm going to share. This is my build process for this plane.

1. On the first day I started with the wings section. It quite straight forward actually. The best servo for this plane is in 9g category. I fixed both aileron control with HXT900 servo. Although it is recommended to use high end servo such as hs56 but so far HXT servo never failed me. You need servo extension for sure. Also be sure to apply CA on all hinges although it pre-fix by the factory. Be sure to read the manual thoroughly. The manual however lack of pictures and a lot of words to read. Kinna misleading to me..need more pictures in color..not black and white and also quite blurry..

2. On the second day I started to fixed the motor mount. It kinna tricky for me since the mount is made from balsa and quite fragile if enough force is given and I might broken it. To put the motor mount into place require a lot of patient since I must insert it very2 slow, gently push it into the slot since it quite tight and make sure not to snap anything. Once everything in you can use CA to bind the mount into the firewall.

3. Day 3 I'm working on the rudder and elevator..it's a straight forward process. One remark the two pieces elevator section where I have to merge both elevator by using carbon rod and one long and flat carbon piece. This is where I make mistake but really I have no idea how to do it. At first I thought that I need assemble the two piece elevator first using the rod and let it dry. To my surprise after the two piece connected, I cannot insert this into elevator section. At the end I had to cut elevator section and open for easy but dirty insertion. (This is the best way I can think off). Rudder section is a straight forward process. The interesting part of rudder assembly is the pull-pull system which this plane employ. This is my first pull-pull system for me. At first I though of using direct servo-rudder mechanism since there is slot for both elevator and rudder servo at the back. But only one slot can be use since it will block the other one when servo has been inserted.

4. Day four..I have finished with all the elevator and rudder assembly. The next thing to do is to mount the motor (Turnigy 4240B 900kv), ESC (Turnigy 60A) and receiver (Assan 2.4Ghz 6ch). Turnigy motor fit nicely into the motor mount with no modification needed to mounting hole. I'm using 12x6 APC-style prop and 5mm of shaft adaptor to mount the prop to the motor. Perfect fit.
This is the final look of my EF extra300 with some decals. I think I'm going to color the plastic conopy with black to hide the internal system and make it looks cool.

Total AUW is 37oz arround 1.06kg..a little bit heavy than expected 34oz due to overweight motor but I think it's OK. The CG still tail heavy. I going to put her on static test late today and see the data from my e-logger.

Updates!!
Here's the result of static test
Max throttle:
Amp: 24A
Watt:240W

Plenty of power for this setup. I'll bet I can hover this in just under half throttle. The motor rated at 500W so it only half of its capability. Maybe this deepavali I'll try to maiden her.

Hari Raya Funfly

A few pictures during Hari Raya funfly at Peremba. Date 18 Oct 2008, Time 10.00-2.00pm.

Sapac Extra 330L Update

After changing to direct mount setup and new motor install, it fly much2 better. It easier to control and perform 3D. I have this video taken during hari raya funfly but quite short due to limited time and the field is dead wet from last night heavy shower.

I recommend not to use the stock motor and change it to direct mount. The following is my setup:
Motor: 1000kv Apex 450 BL motor
Prop: 11x6 --> I'm going to change to 12x6 later on
ESC: 30A SSEsc
Servo: 3 x Hxt900
Rx: Assan 6Ch 2.4G

The data:
Full throttle static test shows that only 170W of power require and 17 A withdrawn with 11x7. So
I recon I can use 12x6 prop for better 3D stability.

For the flight test I just perform some high altitude prop hang, and some basic flight test trimming and everything went well. It fly straight and stable. 3D is much more predictable. In conclusion I like this plane and this is my next step of flying full fuse 3D plane.

Next step would be Acromaster and EF Extra..my target would be 50cc Extra..huhu..

I have the video here.

Sapac Extra 330L

My new toy's arrived 2 days ago. Its extra 330L from sapac. This is my second attempt to fly full fuse 3D plane. The first one is carden extra330 but that was long time ago. I think I have the confidence to fly full fuse 3D. I'll start with this plane first. I have cheap bargain from rcsmart with only rm190 including 5200kv BL inrunner motor with gear. I must say the assembly for this plane is pretty quick. All you need is a simple servo setup and that's it. Rudder and elevator just by screwing in fuse. Add little glue gun for extra strength. Motor already mounted. Some modification I made to battery compartment to suit my 1550 3s1p lipo.

I had her test fly last day but very disappointed with her performance. I ask Ilham to maiden her (the best pilot we have) still this plane stall like stone. If no power given it will stall beyond recoverable. Hmm crashed her but no biggy since just a minor crash. Simple quick glue and every back to normal.

I think I will modified her with my own motor 1000kv with 11x6 prop with direct setup. The geared system was too week and maybe caused her to failure..dunno..Wait for my next modification to this plane. We'll see what happen.

Update!!
Just finished with DIY firewall from plywood for my new Apex motor. I'm going to install her with my Apex 1000kv motor and 11x6 prop. I'm going to test her this Friday with this new setup. Will report back then.

Agusta A109 Heliartist updates

I've finished with the assembly and setting up the fuse and ready for airbrush. What can I say from my experience with assembling agusta a109 from heliartist was quite challenging. I've made several modification to the fuse to accommodate dragonus 450 frame inside this fuse.

Useful tips:
1. Rail type of base mount for mounting the heli base to the fuse. 4 long screws needed with nuts to lock the rail to fuse base. You need to drill 4 small holes. Use a square plywood to reinforce the base mount.
2. Test the heli before fix it into the fuse. Make sure all the setting correct.
3. I put the gyro under the frame mount.
4. Take your time, don't rush.
5. You need to make a square holes at the tail section for ease your tail assembly.

Some pictures during before sending my fuse to yus for airbrush.

Neat eh'..I had test fly her last day and everything works. Sorry no video.

I'm going for the medic design

Agusta A109 Heliartist

White beauty

Comes with detachable head for easy battery instalation

The retract is working now

Need some adjustment for my dragonus frame; battery mount, gyro mount taken out to give way for retract system.

This is my latest project after letting go my Heliartist Airwolf fuselage. I bought this fuse from flying-hobby and it arrived on my doorstep in just 3 days. This is white fuse Agusta comes with retract system. Just finished with the retract mechanism and it's working fine. I use the channel 5 as the retract channel since I only have 6chn rx and luckily I'm using Gy240 as my gryo. So here it is my Agusta 109. Still thinking of the colour scheme..all yellow, military stipes, medic heli hmm...

YAK54 3D plane

New plane just arrived at my door step today. Pleased with the build quality. I would like to see how far EPP can bear the impact compared to coroplast.

Some review that I got from the website:
The unbreakable version use fiber material to strengthen the front part and middle part .The front part is solid and reduce the shock effectively. The production of fuselages and wings are made out of 4 carbon fibre crates and are strongly built. The aerofoils apply core sandwich structure and inset cross carbon bars, which make the aerofoils more eye-catching and fairly resistant of distortion. The plane models are entirely made from EPP and carbon fibre with such characteristics as:stability during flights, being anti-shock and convenience in maintenance and repair.

I'm going to install 1500kv motor, 10x4 APC prop, ESC 30A, lipo 1550mah 3s1p, 4x9g servos.

Prop Saver

Prop saver is a small size tools which use to save your propeller. But you need to correctly use it in order for it to function. Here I would like to show how to use prop saver properly.

  • Insert the prop saver into the shaft. Make sure the face of the prop saver is the same as your propeller mount hole. Which side up depend on your prop design. This to make sure your prop will not move or unstable during high RPM. Do not insert the prop saver too deep into the motor shaft. Just at the top of the shaft is good enough or your prop saver will not function. Tight the prop saver screws. Make sure also the shaft is nicely fit with your motor shaft.

  • Make sure that the prop mount nicely fit at the tip of the prop saver.

  • Fix the prop to the prop saver by using rubber bands. 3 rubber bands is good enough to hold the prop onto the prop saver.

  • Make sure the prop can be flex as the picture above. If you tighten it too much until your prop cannot flex..loosen a bit.
Safety tips...when you're using prop saver, there's possibility it will pull out during high RPM. Please make sure safety of your self and other's while using prop saver. If the prop and prop saver is not mount properly it will cause vibration to your plane.

Happy flying..

CoroExtra 330

Introducing my CoroExtra330..

IMHO corrugated plastic is one of the best material for building profile airplane model to date. It's easy to get and cheap too. EPP is also one of the option but it's hard to get and quite expensive. coro is super tough and easy to shape. Although many people say that it's quite heavy compared to depron but I don't think so. A little trade off between durability and weight. I say go for coro dump depron. :D..

I was improved a lot since then with my coroExtra. Now I'm able to prop hang my extra very low until sweep the ground. No problem with crash since it can sustain crash without any problem.

some tips:
  • All you need is a little bit of creativity and common sense while building a coro profile plane.
  • Make sure when you cut your coro align to the corrugated line and it is perpendicular with your wing or fuselage.
  • No hinge required. All you have to do is to cut it in half and make a clearance around 2mm fir easy movement of any flaps.
  • Glue gun works like charm on coro. It's bind very good.
  • Strengthen the wing by using carbon rod.
  • See my second picture. Devise this extra body retention under the wing to provide additional strength.
  • Important!!! move the elevator and rudder servos near the tail section for precise control. This is to avoid the pushrod from bending during servo travel. I get better elevator and rudder control. updates..
That's all..A little bit of imagination and creativity you'll get almost indestructible profile 3D plane. Later on I'll try to upload my video doing low prop hang with my charming extra..

My power plant:
  • motor 1500kv
  • prop 10x5
  • ESC 30A
  • lipo 2200mah 20C/1500mah 20C
  • Servox3 Hxt
  • rx ASSAN 6chn
With this setup I can do prop hang just in half throttle. Max amp draw from this setup is 22A. It's match made in heaven...

You can download the EXTRA330 tiled version from 3dbatixEXTRA
Or KATANA tiled version here KATANA

ASSAN 2.4 Radio system

I'm moving to 2.4GHz..good bye 35MHz..My Futaba 9CHP will be upgraded tonight. I just received my ASSAN 2.4GHz system today. Will put it to test this friday. Yeehaaaw..

It's great. I've installed the ASSAN tx module in my Futaba 9CHP and it's working like charm.
Some partial review.
  1. The tx module fit nicely into my 9chp module. No moving part. The only problem is with the antenna. It is better if the antenna come out from inside the radio holder and also the antenna if you put your radio on the ground without any transmitter stand it will hit the ground. Also I need to modify my transmitter stand because the support part of my stand is in the way of the antenna. Need to lower the support part with some epoxy.
  2. The binding process is just in a minute or two. Just switch your radio to PPM mode then switch back off and on again. Immediately move the elevator stick up and down several time until you can hear beeping sound and blinking red LED on the module start. The radio is waiting for binding signal. Put the binding plug on channel 1 and 3 then power up the receiver. In just 2-3 second the receiver LED will turn green. Then it's done. Just plug in all the servo into the desired channel and there you go. The system is up and running. It also comes with fail safe system on all channels.
  3. Range test. I've tested around 100feet with blocking view such as car and tree. No problem at all. Will test more ground later on.

This 2.4GHz system works. I like very much. Some design issues but that's just minor.
Partial review can be downloaded here --> http://slumberjerrc.com/eshop/ASSAN_review.pdf

Overall I'm very satisfied with it's performance and easy installation plus cheap 2.4 system. Good move assan.
